Cartilage ear piercings can take longer to heal than a traditional earlobe piercing. It’s generally recommended that you wait at least six months before your first cartilage jewelry change. While proper cartilage piercing care and cleaning can facilitate faster healing, it’s important to remember that everybody heals differently.
Most cartilage piercings are compatible with flat back studs, circular barbells, curved barbells, straight barbells, hinged hoops, captive rings, and more. Some cartilage piercings require specific jewelry; for example, the industrial piercing requires an industrial barbell.
“Regular” earrings (or earlobe piercing earrings) are typically smaller in gauge (20 or 22-gauge). It’s generally recommended to use 16 or 18-gauge jewelry in cartilage piercings like daith, tragus, helix, conch, and rook. Industrial piercings typically require 14-gauge jewelry. Different gauge sizes are recommended to accommodate swelling and healing for each unique piercing type.
To clean your cartilage piercing jewelry, simply rinse it with warm water and antibacterial soap.
